Pregnancy and Osteopathy
What is osteopathy and how can it help during pregnancy?
=> More infos
Osteopathy is a manual therapeutic approach which aims to relieve functional ailments such as lower back pain, hip pain, venous congestion and digestive problems. It helps to harmonize the body structures modified by pregnancy and to prepare the body for childbirth.
What changes occur during pregnancy and how can osteopathy help relieve associated disorders?
During pregnancy, women experience significant physical and emotional changes. Hormones influence their body and psyche, while the growth of the fetus requires adjustments in the abdominal space. Organs, nerves, blood vessels and the diaphragm adapt, and ligaments, muscles, fascia and the pelvic floor become more elastic.
However, these adaptations can lead to various disorders such as back pain, coccyx and pubic pain, feeling of heavy legs, fatigue, headaches, neck tension, muscle pain, as well as digestive problems such as nausea, heartburn and constipation. Other symptoms, such as edema and carpal tunnel syndrome, may also occur.
Osteopathy offers techniques to relieve this discomfort. By working on the mobility of joints, muscles, fascia and viscera, osteopathy helps reduce pain, improve general well-being and support future mothers throughout this period of transformation.
When should I consult an osteopath during my pregnancy?
It is recommended to consult an osteopath trained in obstetrics in the event of discomfort or symptoms. At the end of pregnancy (8th month), it is advisable to consult to check the good mobility of the structures involved in childbirth: the pelvis, lumbar, hips, perineum and abdominal and back-lumbar muscles.
Are osteopathy sessions safe for the fetus?
Osteopathy sessions are adapted to each stage of pregnancy and do not present any major risk for the fetus.
What are the common symptoms that osteopathy can treat during pregnancy?
Osteopathy can help treat:
- Lower back pain, back pain, pain in the coccyx (coccygodynia), in the pubis (pubalgia), in the hips (coxalgia), buttock pain.
- Diaphragmatic tensions and sensations of respiratory limitation.
- Tensions in the lower abdomen.
- Pain or tension in the perineum.
- Nausea, heartburn, constipation.
- General fatigue and sleep disorders.
- Pelvic congestion: feeling of heavy legs, edema, hemorrhoidal disorders.
- Headaches, tension in the neck.
Does osteopathy replace traditional medical care?
No, osteopathy does not replace traditional medical monitoring, but it is part of a holistic approach aimed at the well-being of the mother and child.
Can osteopathy help after childbirth?
Yes, osteopathy is beneficial after childbirth to restore postural balance, relieve pain and promote rapid recovery.
